Description

Cuyamaca Open House: Corequisite Math Remediation in Action

At Cuyamaca College, completion of transfer-level math increased from 10% to 67% in one year among students formerly labeled “remedial,” and faculty are remarking that students' math conversations are deeper than they've ever seen. Cuyamaca did it by using high school grades for placement and replacing traditional remedial courses with corequisite support models at the transfer level. Their first year results are featured in a new report from the California Acceleration Project, Leading the Way.

The changes made at Cuyamaca are similar to the reforms underway in the CSU and synergistic with the goals of AB705, legislation that was signed by Governor Brown in October 2017.

Come see how they did it. This Open House will provide you with an opportunity to observe math corequisite courses in action. In addition, you will learn more about the structure of these courses, have the opportunity to ask questions, and receive guidance from math faculty who are in the classroom every day.

This Open House will include:

  • A brief introduction to the structure of corequisite models at Cuyamaca College
  • Time to observe multiple corequisite courses in action
  • Q & A time with:
    • Department Chair
    • Faculty teaching corequisite courses
